The skilled espresso machine operator, well-trained in the art of coffee preparation and often appreciated no further than the domain of his own coffee shop or restaurant is now gaining wider recognition through local and world championship competitions. This past June, the third annual World Barista Championships (WBC) took place in Oslo Norway. An “olympic games” for those actively practising the craft of espresso preparation in a retail environment, the event showcased the talents of top representatives from several countries.

For the first time, Canada is poised to send a national representative to the world competition. The first annual Canadian Barista Championships will take place at the Canadian Coffee & Tea Expo 2003 on June 20-21, 2003 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The winner will win a trip to the World Barista Championships for 2004 to be held in Italy. Other great prizes will be offered to winners.

The WBC is the world’s largest competition and is held jointly by the Specialty Coffee Association of America and Europe to promote quality, foster coffee creativity and attention to the profession of the barista. The participants are judged on the preparation of espresso, cappuccino and espresso based signature beverages on the criteria of taste, beverage presentation, barista technique and personal presentation. Contestants are qualified through their own national championship for the world competition. For information on the world contests visit the web sites: www.worldbaristachampionship.comwww.scaa.org.
